Design of Nursery

Before construction starts, a sketch plan must be made, as accurately as possible. Measurements should preferably be made with a tape. The plan must include:

  • Fence or wall,
  • Inside paths,
  • Water tanks and distribution system,
  • Seedbeds and stand-out beds,
  • Soil storage shelter,
  • Working area,
  • Compost making area,
  • Store,
  • Sale and display point.

Particular attention should be made to the drainage and water supply systems. The perimeter should be as nearly square as possible, so that it will be of minimum length in relation to the area it encloses. Where there is a road it should be possible to drive into the nursery, so that soil and sand can be unloaded directly into the storage area.

When the plan is complete, check it carefully at the nursery site. Consider the location of each component from the point of view of its own function and also its relationship with the other components. Any final improvements to the plan should be discussed with the person in charge before construction starts.
