Edit on 20.01.2024:
Ordered the product again on 15th of this month and got it delivered today (250g pack size). Mfg date on the pack is Jan 23, means that pack is now one year old, and according to the label it is best before 12 month after packaging date.
I understand, technically, it is maybe still inside the 12 month ‘best before’ period on the label. And from what I would say checking it, I might be surely able to still use it in my (private kitchen) for another couple of weeks, or even months, as dehydrated products might be still useable after long time, and I will surely use my common sense and trust my gut feelings. So I do not intend to send it back, but simply use it as long as it seems to be eatable. (yeah you might think I’m a crazy ‘no risk no fun’ guy, but in fact I always try to be somehow reasonable, and do my own risk calculations …)
On the Amazon product page, the seller writes in the description that this product is best before 36 months after opening, and I guess that could be totally the case as dehydrated stuff keeps usually for long time if properly stored, as per my experience (of some decades with such stuff). So maybe the product’s label is wrong, who knows.
Yet they write in their disclaimer, ‘We recommend that you do not rely solely on the information presented here and that you always read labels, warnings, and directions before using or consuming a product.’ And on the label, the warning is: best before 12 months from date of packaging.
So, yes there is much difference between 36 months after opening, and 12 month after packaging … and lot of confusion, especially when the product reaches one of these dates already when you get it delivered.
That said, and the question whether it is still good or not set aside, I feel it makes somehow no sense to order a food product directly from manufacturer (circumventing whole sales and local retail shops who might both keep stuff in their stock for month before finally selling it), expecting to get brand new products, but still getting stuff which arrives just 10 days before being legally outdated according to what is written on the package. Whether it is a canned or dehydrated or whatever else food product, I expect getting something near to production/packaging date if I order it directly from manufacturer.
I might be wrong with my perspective, and maybe it is my own mistake and I should have simply asked the seller/manufactuer before ordering to tell me the exact packaging date, and the change from 5 stars to 3 stars for the product might not be justified in everybody’s eyes, but it is simply how I feel currently about that issue.
